I thought I would use the same approach in my quest to become a fashion designer. I figured that if I made nice-looking clothes, promoted my products, and learned a variety of different sewing techniques, I would be discovered. Let me tell you, it isn’t that easy. You can learn how to design clothes on your own, but you can’t learn how to succeed in the industry. It takes more than taste and raw talent to become a fashion designer. It requires qualifications and professional contacts, as well as techniques that you’re not likely to come across on your own. That is why fashion design school makes sense.

Of course, I had to learn this the hard way. I spent a few years struggling in obscurity before I figured out what that I needed schooling if I wanted to become a fashion designer. I would make a little bit of money selling clothing at art and craft fairs, and there was one local store that would carry my designs. Nonetheless, it was a lot of work for not a lot of money. I always had a second job, and couldn’t really regularly depend on designing fashion for my income. I’m stubborn, but even I had had enough after a few years of this. I decided that I would go to a school of fashion design.

At first, I was pretty depressed about the prospect. I like to do things on my own, and going through school seemed like cheating. Nonetheless, within the first week of school, I knew I had made the right decision. My teachers were interesting and creative people, and I was learning more in a few classes that I had in the last six months. I already had the raw talent, and my professors were impressed with my work. With the professional training I acquired at school, however, I was able to finally get it together and establish a career and a name for myself. I’m not a starving artist anymore; I truly have become a fashion designer!
